Day three favourite song – Further On (Up the Road)

This song represents that very horrendous and tragic event for so many in New York City, Sept 11 2001. For one of my favourite artists, it was very personal and so close to home. So he created The Rising album in tribute to those thousands of lives lost, and so many families who would never be the same again. Indeed, our world has never been the same since. Another of those life moments of remembering where you were when …

This song is almost typical Springsteen. Workmanlike, solid, and grows on you in time. But then, so beautifully reworked in 2008 with a flourish in Dublin. Springsteen with violins! Who would have thunked it! And the divergence of voices.

Just such a special song for me at so many levels. As a tribute. As a work of collaborative beauty. Of joy, of hope, even amidst the deepest of sadness.

Where the way is dark and the night is cold
One sunny mornin’ we’ll rise I know
And I’ll meet you further on up the road
